BattleGrid

I’m sure the name “BattleGrid” is in use by someone, somewhere. If that person, or lawyers representing that person, find this page, let me know, and I’ll start working on finding a new name.

BattleGrid is a “Casual RTS” game. By that, I mean it has the basics of most real-time strategy games (building bases, commanding units), but without some of the micromanagement required in more “hardcore” RTS games.

BattleGrid uses a very Tron-esque graphic style, and uses computer terms to describe most components in the game. Resources are “bits”, harvested from a “bitstream”, and stored in your “cache”. These bits are then “compiled” to create “subroutines”, which are the structures and units on the grid. Each player is a “process”, fighting for control of the grid, which is meant to represent a block of memory. Yes, it’s geeky.

Here’s a short list of features:

3 Game Modes
BattleGrid has three game modes: Skirmish, Challenge, and Defense.
Skirmish mode is like most RTS games – multiple players, each starting from a single base, fighting for victory.
Challenge mode is the equivalent of the “campaign” mode in most games – players may start with a preset base and have to work from there.
Defense mode is most similar to tower defense games – you start with a base you need to defend, and increasingly difficult waves of enemies attack your base until it is destroyed.

Map Editor
The game features a map editor, which can be used to make any number of maps. Every map that ships with the game was created using the same editor.

Customizable AI
You can tweak some AI settings so you can play the type of match you want to play. You can make AI players more aggressive, so they’ll attack more often, or more defensive, so they’ll turtle in their base. Of course, the AI may still act “out-of-character” occasionally, but the AI is designed so you can adjust it to let you play how you want. If you want a challenge, you can make the AI brutal, but if you just want to dominate your enemies without much effort, you can do that, too

Other Stuff
I’m planning on adding some achievements and unlockables, but I have yet to decide on what to add. I’d also like to create a way for players to share their maps, but I don’t know how to create that infrastructure yet.

DLC
There’s likely to be paid DLC at some point adding new structures or game modes.

Platforms
BattleGrid is built using Unity, so it will be released on the following platforms:

  • iPad
  • Android (tablets)
  • PC / Mac / Linux

I’ll likely put BattleGrid on Steam’s Greenlight thingy and if it succeeds, will be available through Steam. If not, possibly through Desura or any other digital distributor who’ll have it.
